  2. Does anybody know when the next version of DOS will be released?

  4. Will it be called DOS 6.1 or the more conservative DOS 6.01?

  6. Will there also be DOS 6.2 or DOS 6.02? Or just a jump to 7.0?

  8. Does anybody know when the Microsoft support-line wait-time will drop 
  9. below one hour? That does not include the five minutes of time it takes 
  10. to listen to the commercials and get through the menus.

  12. I appreciated Doug Lowe's discussion in the file DBLSPACE.ZIP. It's 
  13. about 3K. His hammer hits a lot of nails. You otta read it.

  15. I hope Doug will take a sledge-hammer, or an ax, or an A-bomb to 
  16. MEMMAKER.

  26. There have been press reports that installing DOS 6.0 can cause data 
  27. loss. 
  28.  
  29. I expect that these reports are overblown, but certain precautions 
  30. should be taken anyway. 
  31.  
  32.         1. Create a DOS 5.0 bootable floppy
  33.  
  34.                 SYS A:  (enter)  
  35.  
  36.         2. Copy your DOS directory to the floppy
  37.  
  38.                 COPY C:\DOS\*.*  A:   (enter)
  39.  
  40.         3. Very important! Copy your autoexec and config files to the 
  41.            floppy 
  42.  
  43.                 COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT  A:     (enter)           
  44.                 COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS  A:       (enter)
  45.  
  46.         4. Reboot from the floppy to make sure it works
  47.  
  48.                 {Ctrl}-{Alt}-{Del}, or better yet, the BIG RED, not
  49.                 all reboots are equal!
  50.  
  51. This should protect against absolute disaster, but you may need a 
  52. little (maybe even a lot) of help to recover. But at least you got the 
  53. crucial files.

  55. There are two DOS 6.0 programs that should be used with some caution: 
  56.  
  57.         MEMMAKER   and   DBLSPACE
  58.  
  59.         MEMMAKER 
  60.  
  61.         I haven't been able to make MEMMAKER work! It changes your
  62.         autoexec and config files -- which is why it is essential that
  63.         these files be backed-up.
  64.  
  65.         DBLSPACE
  66.  
  67.         DBLSPACE can effectively double or even triple your disk space. 
  68.         I have installed it on two of my five logical disks. It seems 
  69.         to work seemlessly. I plan to do the other drives as well 
  70.         after a satisfactory honeymoon.
  71.                               
  72.         This in contrast to STACKER, a third-party program that claims 
  73.         to do the same thing. I installed STACKER and got rid of it 
  74.         as fast as possible.
  75.  
  76. DOS 6.0 is a major upgrade and new programs will take advantage of the 
  77. new commands, so it is important to stay current. 
  78.  
  79. Unless you're in need of more memory or more disk space, you might be well-
  80. advised to let MEMMAKER and DBLSPACE "age" a while, like a good wine.
  81.  
  82. Installation of the basic DOS 6.0 takes about 20 minutes.
